Lawrence Memorial Grassland Preserve

Leader/botonist: Stu Garrett

Dr. Stu Garrett will lead field trip to The Nature Conservancy’s Lawrence Memorial Grassland Preserve.  The preserve is a rare remnant of the land as it appeared to the pioneers. Tall native bunchgrasses are the dominant vegetation on the deep soil biscuits.  This time of the year bitterroot, big headed clover and many species of lomatiums are blooming on the shallow scablands. 

 

Drive:  ½ hour from Hancock Field Station. We will be taking a van.

Hike: fairly easy 3.5 miles.

 

 

Paleontology and Geology Trip

Pine Creek Ranch at Warm Springs

Leader:  Brigette Whipple

Bottonist:

 

Brigette Whipple a tribal anthropologist and Rick Hayes the Conservation Area Manager  will lead short hikes and discussions on the cultural uses of native plants.   Bridgett is a memberof the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs …… Rick   They will discuss cultural uses of plants, the Pine Creek Ranch, its purchase, its management, and restoration goals. 

 

Drive: None. The ranch adjacent to Field Station.

Hike:  Several short hikes.                                                  

 

 

Spring Basin Wilderness Area

Leader:  Aaron Kilgore, ONDA

Bottonist: Berta Youtie, EOSS

 

Trip will be led by Aaron Kilgore of ONDA. and Berta Youtie EOSS. Spring Basin is Oregon’s newest Wilderness Area housing ,any wildflowers endemic to the John Day Valley.  We anticipate seeing many plants and hopefully a barrel cactus, one of Oregon’s largest cacti.

 

Drive:  less than ½ hour

Hike:  3 to 4 miles

 

 

Hancock Field Station Hike

Hike from the Field station uphill toward Iron Mountain  This will be the most strenuous of hikes.  See lots of wildflowers and paleo sites such as the nut beds.

 

Drive:  none.  Leaving from Hancock field station

Hike:  possible 5 mile hike

 

 

Painted Hills

John Day Fossil Bed botanist will lead trip throught the Painted Hills and up Carrol Rim.  We hope to see…..

 

Drive: 1 hour and 15 minute drive.
